El Carmen

Mercado central

  • Modernist market near Lonja de la Seda (Llotja de la Seda) and located in El Carmen
  • Pretty big as it covers over 8K square meters
  • Used as an open-air marketplace in 1839 but then turned into a roofed market in 1928
  • Contstruction lasted from 1914 until 1928
  • Designed by architects who trained at the School of Architecture of Barcelona
  • Blends Art Nouveau, Gothic and Baroque
  • Great spot to get a small snack and appreciate the beauty of the vivid market
  • Please, remember the market is actually a place for professionals to work. There are some great pictures to be taken inside this building. However, it is highly recommended to avoid intervening with their activity.
  • One of the streets surrounding the market is the “Avinguda de Maria Cristina”. It has some nice bars to have something to eat or drink. It is not too expensive.
